Hopping on the Columbus Bandwagon

[UPDATE: check out more CSO satire here.]

A recent comment by Columbus Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Tony Beadle in the Columbus Dispatch has caught my attention:

"At the end of the day, people have to understand that we've got a huge dinosaur here that has to be fed 500 bales of hay a day."

Depending on your point of view, this is either a very poor or incredibly brilliant choice of words. The implications behind these two metaphors - a dinosaur and bales of hay - are way too big to be ignored. Who is this guy trying to fool?

Calling an orchestra a "dinosaur"... really? I mean could you at least feign concern and sincerity? This is tantamount to calling all orchestral music extinct.

This dinosaur metaphor draws to mind recent odd comments by Greg Sandow, comparing symphony orchestras to museum exhibits.

Also, "bales of hay" as a metaphor for support money is a bit demeaning, implying that symphony support is a worthless (even flammable) commodity. Hay? Really?!

Maybe I am jumping to conclusions, but this little quote takes the cake. So, I am jumping on the Columbus bandwagon in my own unique way. Photoshop is my friend and I am in feeling frisky.

If you are unfamiliar with the current situation in Columbus, blogger Drew McManus has loads of information on his site to check out.

CSO clarinetist David Thomas offers some special insider commentary that is worth investigating.
